Introducing this Spark
The course HUN8945 is required for accreditation standards and certain competencies must be completed based on these standards. The mock interview allows students to participate in a real-life situation where they will have to debate and promote themselves. Such an interview scenario is a useful tool for helping students build confidence and refine their interviewing abilities for life in the workplace. With the AI mock interview, students will use communication skills to influence or produce a desired outcome during negotiations or conflict resolution discussions and communicate in a responsive, responsible, respectful, and compassionate manner.

Implementation Guide for Instructors
The information below is provided to help instructors implement this AI Spark learning activity in other courses. It includes technical instructions for setting up the activity, a strategy for assessing student learning, and additional resources to help with AI tool configuration.
This AI Spark activity features Gemini’s Guided Learning model (powered by LearnLM), an interactive, AI-driven educational partner designed to simulate a realistic, step-by-step mock job interview. Through structured dialogue, students practice answering behavioral and situational questions tailored to specific healthcare roles—such as registered dietitian positions at AdventHealth, Purdue University, or Kickoff. Rather than simply giving static answers, the AI evaluates each response using proven frameworks like the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result), providing real-time, constructive feedback on active listening, teamwork, and communication skills to help students build confidence and refine their professional interviewing abilities.
Step 1. Configure Custom Gem (Healthcare Mock Interview Coach):
- Go to Gemini and select Gem Manager (or Create a Gem).
- Name: Healthcare Mock Interview Coach.
- Description: An AI-powered peer tutor that conducts interactive mock interviews for Registered Dietitian and healthcare roles.
- Persona & Behavior: Act as a warm, encouraging interviewer for healthcare/dietetics roles. Ask one question at a time.
- Framework: Evaluate user answers using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
- Feedback: Provide immediate feedback highlighting strengths and actionable areas for improvement before asking the next question.
- Knowledge Files: Upload relevant job descriptions and scoring rubrics to the Gem knowledge base.
- Save & Share: Set access permissions to "Viewer" and copy the shareable link to distribute to students.
Step 2. Set Up Canvas LMS Assignment:
- Navigate to Canvas > Assignments > + Assignment titled "Activity: AI-Powered Mock Interview Practice".
- In the Rich Content Editor, paste the step-by-step student instructions, direct Gem link, target practice roles, STAR method requirements, and submission parameters.
- Set Submission Type to Online (enable File Uploads for chat transcripts/PDF logs and Text Entry for reflection).
- Attach a rubric evaluating the STAR Method, Active Listening/Adaptability, and Self-Reflection.
Students will need to meet >/= 3/5 based on the rubric. Students will be allowed to repeat the assignment as they receive feedback from AI until standards are met. In SpeedGrader, check both the chat transcript and reflection; reiterate that submitted chat logs will naturally trigger AI detectors and should not be penalized.

Pre-Activity Preparation: Ensure students write out STAR bullet points for past clinical experiences before initiating the session.
Time Management: The six-question mock interview session typically takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete in real time.
Key Behavioral Constraints:
- Pacing: Ask only one question at a time and wait for the student's response before proceeding.
- STAR Evaluation: Evaluate every answer using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
- Feedback First: Provide targeted strengths and refinement tips before delivering the next interview scenario.
Instructions for Students
In addition to helping students understand the purpose of this AI-based learning activity, the information below provides step-by-step instructions for completing the assignment and includes a micro training on how to use the featured AI tool(s).
In this activity, you are interacting with an AI-powered peer tutor driven by Google's LearnLM model (a language model specialized for education) integrated into Gemini's Guided Learning system. It is a conversational AI assistant specifically designed to act as a guided learning partner rather than a passive answer generator. It adapts to your current level of knowledge and guides you through complex topics using structured pedagogical approaches.
Features:
- Interactive Mock Practice & Roleplay: Simulates specific healthcare interviews (acting as an interviewer or client) and gives real-time feedback.
- Step-by-Step Problem Solving: Breaks down complex interview tasks into manageable steps and uses guiding questions to build mastery.
- Tailored Feedback & Coaching: Analyzes responses using the STAR method and provides targeted refinement tips.
- Pacing & Adaptation: Tracks conversational context, adjusts to target roles, and delivers questions sequentially.
- Have your target job descriptions, résumé, and pre-written interview scenarios or frameworks (e.g., STAR method examples) ready next to you before starting.
- Open the AI interview tutor session using your FSU institutional credentials.
- When prompted, select the specific target position you want to practice for (e.g., Clinical RD at AdventHealth, Sports Dietitian at Purdue, or Telehealth Coach at Kickoff). Confirm your choice so the AI tailors its questions to that role's core competencies.
- Read the Question: The AI will ask one question at a time.
- Formulate Your Response: Write your answer directly in the chat box using the STAR framework (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for behavioral prompts. Do not rush through or provide single-word replies.
- Review Feedback: After each answer, review the AI's feedback on your strengths and refinement tips.
- Iterate or Move On: Revise your response based on the feedback or confirm you are ready for the next question. Leverage the feedback between turns to iterate and polish your answer.
- Performance Summary: Once you have completed all interview questions, ask the AI for a summary of your overall performance. A minimum score of 3 out of 5 must be achieved to pass this competency. If you scored < 3, repeat the interview until the standard is met (you may repeat even with a score >/=3 to refine your technique).
- Review your primary strengths and key growth areas across communication, active listening, teamwork, and problem-solving.
What to Submit:
- Chat Transcript: Complete transcript of the interview interaction saved and submitted to your personal OneDrive / Canvas drop box.
- Rubric / Reflection: Completed evaluation rubric and performance summary submitted to your OneDrive / Canvas drop box.
