Introducing this Spark
After students participate in stress interventions, they will use AI to compare and evaluate which strategies may be most beneficial for their lifestyle. The activity addresses the need for students to critically evaluate AI recommendations rather than accepting them over their own experience and supporting evidence.
Learning Outcome
After completing this activity, students will be able to compare personal experience, supporting evidence, and AI recommendations to make informed decisions about appropriate stress-management strategies.

Implementation Guide for Instructors
The information below is provided to help instructors implement this AI Spark learning activity in other courses. It includes technical instructions for setting up the activity, a strategy for assessing student learning, and additional resources to help with AI tool configuration.
This experience is designed to help counseling students practice skills, apply theory, and conceptualize developmental needs. The AI will provide an interactive element that serves multiple benefits including (1) availability for asynchronous students, (2) a simulation that doesn't require a peer to be a strong actor, and (3) a specific process needed for the persona to go from more closed off to more open.
There is no special AI configuration or shared tool. You will provide students with an explanation of the purpose of the assignment, the instructions for completion, and a structured prompt that asks AI to evaluate the five interventions based only on the information the student provides. Have students upload their papers as well as the AI prompt. Be sure to include the paper requirements and rubric.
Students will be evaluated on their trial of five stress relievers, selection of three interventions, supporting evidence, and critical comparison of their conclusions with AI recommendations. This assignment provides students an opportunity to explore and evaluate the usefulness and limitations of AI as a tool for analyzing information and supporting personal decision-making.
Instructor Notes & Constraints: For this assignment, students should select their own three preferred interventions before consulting AI so they have an independent conclusion to compare with the AI recommendations. The AI should be framed as an additional source of analysis rather than an authority on what will work best for the student. Remind students they do not need to provide unnecessary personal or health information.
Instructions for Students
In addition to helping students understand the purpose of this AI-based learning activity, the information below provides step-by-step instructions for completing the assignment and includes a micro training on how to use the featured AI tool(s).
You will choose an AI platform such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot. These tools can analyze the information you provide, compare options, identify patterns, and make recommendations based on your description of the five stress-management interventions you personally tried. AI is used as a comparison and decision-support tool after you have already tried the stress relievers and formed your own opinions. You will compare AI's recommendations with your own experience and supporting evidence to explore where AI is useful, where it may make assumptions, and where human judgment is still important. Treat AI output as a comparative perspective to be analyzed, not as medical or definitive advice.
- Select and personally try at least five stress-management interventions discussed in the course. Give each one enough time and attention to evaluate it fairly.
- Record what you tried, why you selected it, how long you used it, the circumstances in which you tried it, and what you noticed before, during, and after the experience.
- Before using AI, select the three interventions you believe would be most useful and realistic for your lifestyle. Always select your interventions before prompting the tool.
- Open ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, or another approved generative AI platform. These tools respond to prompts based on the information you provide.
- Give the AI a summary of your five interventions and your experience with each. Do not include private or identifying information that is not needed for the assignment (e.g., confidential or sensitive health/personal details).
- Ask the AI to recommend the three interventions that appear most practical and potentially beneficial for you based only on the information you provided. Ask it to explain its reasoning, identify assumptions it is making, and note possible limitations of its recommendations. (Treat AI output as a comparative perspective to be analyzed, not as medical or definitive advice.)
- Compare the AI's three recommendations with the three you selected yourself. Identify where you agree, where you disagree, and why.
- Locate credible supporting evidence for the three interventions you ultimately select. You may ask AI for search terms, but you must independently locate and verify the sources you use.
- Write your paper explaining your experience with the five interventions, your final three choices, the supporting evidence, and your evaluation of the AI recommendations.
- Include the AI platform used, your prompt, and the AI response or screenshots with your submission.
What to Submit:
- AI Stress Reliever Analysis Paper: 800+ word paper discussing the five stress relievers tested, final three interventions, supporting evidence, comparison with AI recommendations, and evaluation of AI's usefulness and limitations, plus reference page for sources.
- AI Prompt and Response: Prompts used and the complete AI response (page or screenshots).
