Instructor Insights on Course Quality
In this recurring feature, the Office of Digital Learning recognizes instructors who have achieved high-quality certification of their online courses. The courses have passed a rigorous peer-review process based on the nationally recognized Quality Matters rubric. Using a Q&A format, instructors share their insights about the certification process.
This issue spotlights Amber Ward, the Pearl Tyner Associate Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Art Education at the College of Fine Arts. Ward received her PhD and Certificate in Qualitative Research from the University of Missouri and BFA with teacher certification from Colorado State University.
Congratulations to Ward for her high-quality certified course:

How do you think the Quality Matters (QM) review process has improved your course?
The Quality Matters (QM) review process has improved my online courses by providing a structured framework for continuous improvement, ensuring that course design meets rigorous standards for clarity, accessibility, and engagement. Through QM, for example, I have refined course objectives to align more explicitly with assessments, which has improved the transparency of expectations for students. The process has also guided my integration of instructional technologies, such as Annoto and collaborative diagramming tools, in ways that support knowledge co-construction. Additionally, QM has reinforced the importance of clear navigation and inclusive course design. Ultimately, the QM review has strengthened my ability to foster an engaging, student-centered online learning environment.
What did you value most about the instructional design support you received from your ODL faculty liaison?
I have very much valued the instructional design support from my ODL faculty liaison/team, particularly their commitment to meeting with me regularly to discuss course improvements, their timely responses to emails, and their assistance in developing course alignment maps. Their collaborative approach has made the course design process more meaningful, ultimately strengthening the quality of my online teaching.
What did you value most about the accessibility support you received from your ODL course support specialist?
I appreciate the support provided by the ODL course support specialist/team in ensuring that my online courses are accessible to all students. Their guidance in using and understanding the Accessibility Checker in Canvas, for example, has been helpful in addressing potential barriers in course materials. Additionally, they have provided thoughtful suggestions for improvement, helping me refine content to enhance readability, usability, and overall accessibility. Their expertise has strengthened my ability to create an equitable learning environment that supports all learners.
If you were to encourage a peer to participate in the QM review process, how would you communicate its value?
I would encourage a peer to participate in the QM review process by emphasizing how it provides a meaningful framework for aligning course components to enhance student learning. Through this process, I have found value in ensuring that my module learning objectives not only support but are also informed by the overarching course learning objectives. Additionally, the review process has reinforced the importance of designing learning engagements and assessments that directly address module learning objectives to create a more intentional learning experience.
Would you be willing to share any positive feedback you received from your students about your certified course?
Students have expressed that they clearly understand what is being asked of them and why, which has helped them engage more meaningfully with the coursework. They have also noted that the courses are well organized, making it easier for them to navigate materials, track their progress, and focus on their learning. This feedback reinforces the impact of the QM review process in creating an effective online learning experience.
