The Tough Sell: Sales Simulator

Melissa Roberts, MBA
Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship

Students practice selling products or services to difficult buyers through roleplay with AI, working to recognize hidden objections, avoid outdated tactics, and gain commitment.

Introducing this Spark

When entrepreneurship students role-play with each other during business pitch scenarios, they are not necessarily skilled in poking holes in ideas or arguments or in facing a challenging buyer. This AI Spark learning activity helps replicate the real-world experience of selling to a difficult customer.

Learning Outcome

Students use the persona debater activity to attempt to sell to a difficult customer and consequently refine their business pitch to overcome sales objections. This connects to the course learning objective on overcoming buyer objectives and closing the sale.

Implementation Guide for Instructors

The information below is provided to help instructors implement this AI Spark learning activity in other courses. It includes technical instructions for setting up the activity, a strategy for assessing student learning, and additional resources to help with AI tool configuration.

Overview

This activity uses a Gemini Gem to teach students to sell a product or service to difficult buyers without aggressive pressure. When faced with common stalling tactics like "it's too expensive" or "let me think about it," standard sales scripts often feel pushy and alienate prospective clients. In "The Tough Sell: Sales Simulator," students learn to recognize hidden objections, reframe value around Return on Investment (ROI), and draft warm, high-converting follow-up communications that close the sale.

Technical Instructions
  1. Open Gemini.
  2. In the left sidebar, click Gem Manager (or Gems), then select New Gem.
  3. Set the Name to: Sales Prospect Simulator.
  4. Paste the following structured prompt into the Instructions box:
    1. "You are a potential buyer of my product or service. Question me about my product or service for five minutes. Ask me: 'Why should I purchase from you over others?' Do not go easy on me."
  5. Set behavioral constraints to withhold key pain points unless open-ended discovery questions targeting ROI are asked.
  6. Click Save.

Canvas Setup: Create an assignment in Canvas requiring students to access the Gem, state the product or service they want to practice selling to initiate the scenario, and submit their full chat transcript alongside a reflection on what they learned and how their sales pitch evolved.

Assessment Strategy

Students will submit a transcript of their interaction and pivot reflection. The reflection will be evaluated based on what they learned from the exercise and how that might alter their sales pitch moving forward.

Instructor Notes & Constraints: You could include more about the persona or start with a specific question like "Why should I purchase from you over others?"

Key Behavioral Constraints: "You will only share critical internal information or pain points if asked an open-ended discovery question that directly targets risk or ROI. If asked a closed 'yes/no' question, give a blunt, one-word answer and move on."

Instructions for Students

In addition to helping students understand the purpose of this AI-based learning activity, the information below provides step-by-step instructions for completing the assignment and includes a micro training on how to use the featured AI tool(s).

Overview

This assignment uses a Google Gemini Gem to help you practice selling a product or service to a difficult buyer. You are tasked with overcoming buyer objectives and successfully selling them a solution. The Gem will help you "apply closing skills to gain commitment to action on the part of the stakeholders.

Assignment Instructions
  1. Open the shared The Tough Sell: Sales Simulator Gem link.
  2. Start a new chat with the Gem and state the product or service you want to practice selling to initiate the scenario.
  3. Complete The Tough Sell: Sales Simulator exercise. Expect the buyer to challenge your claims, ask why they should purchase from you over competitors, and resist closing. Keep in mind the buyer will not give up pain points easily. If you ask simple yes/no questions, expect blunt one-word answers. Work through the buyer's objections by using open-ended discovery questions targeting value, risk, and ROI.
  4. Once complete, save or export your full interaction transcript.
  5. Write a brief reflection discussing what you learned from the simulation and how it will alter your sales pitch moving forward.
  6. Upload your transcript and reflection to the assignment drop box in Canvas.

What to Submit

  • Chat transcript: Provide a transcript of your entire interaction with the Gem.
  • Reflections assignment: Provide a reflection of what you learned by completing the exercise.
How to Use This Tool

What is a Gem? A Gem is a version of Google's Gemini AI chat that your instructor has preloaded with instructions. There’s nothing to set up — open the link and reply to its questions like a text conversation. Read more about Google Gems.

  • Sign in. Open the Gem link and sign in with your Google account. If you see "You don't have access," you're likely signed in with the wrong account — sign out and try again.
  • Send a message. Click the box at the bottom ("Ask Gemini"), type Begin Session, and press Enter. Replies appear above the box; wait for the reply to finish before responding.
  • Reply in the same chat. The Gem remembers the whole conversation. Don't click "New chat", which will start the session over.
  • Lost the page? Go to gemini.google.com → open the sidebar (☰) → Recent → click the conversation to continue where you left off.
  • Copy the output. Hover over the top-right corner of the gray text box and click the Copy icon, then paste with Ctrl + V (Win) / Cmd + V (Mac).
  • Good to know. Type text, rather than use voice (Gems don't work with Gemini Live). Don't enter passwords or sensitive personal information. Keep in mind that the Gem may ask you to expand a short answer.
  • Access via FSU. Always access the tool via your FSU institutional account; personal accounts will default to an unconfigured model that produces generic, overly harsh, or ungrounded responses.
