Instructor Insights on Course Quality

In this recurring feature, the Office of Digital Learning recognizes instructors who have achieved high-quality certification of their online courses. The courses have passed a rigorous peer-review process based on the nationally recognized Quality Matters rubric. Using a Q&A format, instructors share their insights about the certification process.

This issue spotlights Dr. Katie Flanagan, teaching faculty III and an assistant instructor in the Department of Sport Management of Anne’s College. She received her PhD in Sport Management from FSU in 2013.

Congratulations to Flanagan for her high-quality certified course:

How do you think the Quality Matters (QM) review process has improved your course?
The Quality Matters review process helped me create stronger alignment between course objectives, module objectives, and assessments. Each assignment and activity now clearly connects back to specific objectives, making it easier for students to see how their work directly contributes to achieving course outcomes. This clarity has improved both the structure of the course and the learning experience for students.

What did you value most about the instructional design support you received from your ODL faculty liaison?
The instructional design support I received was exceptional. Instructions were thorough, communication was always clear and encouraging, and I felt consistently supported throughout the process. My liaison not only provided guidance but also helped me approach course design with more confidence and clarity.

What did you value most about the accessibility support you received from your ODL course design specialist?
The accessibility support helped me recognize that accessibility benefits all learners, not just those with specific needs. Small, thoughtful adjustments—such as formatting, navigation, and alternative text—can make a significant difference in how students engage with and succeed in the course. With the guidance of an accessibility specialist, I was able to identify areas I might not have considered and implement changes that made the course more inclusive and effective for everyone.

If you were to encourage a peer to participate in the QM review process, how would you communicate its value?
I would emphasize that the QM review process provides a structured, supportive way to enhance an online course. Faculty often intend to make improvements but struggle to find the time. This process not only holds you accountable but also guides you step by step, making the improvements manageable and meaningful. The end result is a course that is stronger, more student-friendly, and aligned with best practices in online learning.

Would you be willing to share any positive feedback you received from your students about your certified course?
Students have commented that they appreciate the consistency and organization of the course. Each module follows the same clear structure, so they know exactly what to expect and where to find materials. This consistency has reduced confusion and allowed students to focus more on the content and their learning.
