Introducing this Spark
In this activity, students will build a tailored professional knowledge base using Gemini Notebook and apply human-centered AI prompting techniques to generate personalized cover letters and targeted interview preparation materials that authentically reflect their unique qualifications. The activity addresses the tendency of job-seeking students to generate generic, hallucinated, or robotic application materials by teaching them how to restrict the AI to vetted primary sources and run active self-auditing passes.
Learning Outcome
After completing this learning activity, students should be able to do the following:
- Build Source-Grounded Knowledge Bases: Set up and organize a private professional Notebook that links personal career assets with target industry opportunities.
- Execute Fact-Audited Generative Drafting: Produce professional, non-derivative cover letters limited to verified achievements from the source documents.
- Formulate STAR Interview Strategies: Generate role-specific behavioral interview scenarios and structure high-impact answers using the Situation, Task, Action, Result (STAR) framework.
- Evaluate and Disclose AI Output: Conduct critical line-by-line verification to catch algorithmic hallucinations and document ethical AI collaboration in business communication.

Implementation Guide for Instructors
The information below is provided to help instructors implement this AI Spark learning activity in other courses. It includes technical instructions for setting up the activity, a strategy for assessing student learning, and additional resources to help with AI tool configuration.
This AI Spark activity trains students to treat Gemini Notebook as an authentic career research and development workspace. Rather than prompting general-purpose chatbots that invent qualifications or output clichéd introductory letters, students upload their verified résumé alongside a target job description into a source-grounded Notebook. Through a sequential four-prompt framework—Gap Analysis, Structured Cover Letter Draft, Tone and Length Polish, and a mandatory Fact-Check Audit Pass—students learn how to extract authentic value from generative tools while maintaining strict academic and professional integrity. The workflow concludes with the creation of a dynamic STAR-method interview preparation guide.
Platform Access: Instruct students to access Gemini Notebook using their institutional FSU credentials, so their career data remains private and within the enterprise environment.
Prerequisite Materials: Ensure students have an up-to-date PDF version of their professional résumé and the complete plain text or PDF of an active internship or job posting.
Canvas Assignment Configuration: Create an assignment titled "AI Spark: Mastering Gemini Notebook for Career Success".
- Provide the four-prompt sequencing guide and the STAR interview prompt directly in the assignment description.
- Enable online submissions accepting Word documents (.docx) or PDFs (.pdf).
- Direct students to export their completed materials, include their self-audit report, and provide a shareable view-only link to their Notebook.
Evaluation rests on both the quality of the final professional deliverables and evidence of critical auditing:
- Cover Letter Quality (40%): Assessed on professional formatting, alignment with job requirements, absence of generic clichés, and adherence to the 400-word constraint.
- Fact-Check Audit Verification (30%): Evaluation of the Prompt 4 audit trail showing that all claims, skills, and metrics are 100% grounded in the student's actual résumé.
- STAR Interview Guide (20%): Clear demonstration of the STAR framework (Situation, Task, Action, Result) mapped to role-specific competencies.
- Ethical AI Disclosure & Process Log (10%): Completeness of prompt transcripts and disclosure of AI assistance.
Knowledge Source Materials: Mastering NotebookLM for Career Success
Key Behavioral Constraints: Source-Grounded Restriction: The model is explicitly constrained to generate content using only the uploaded résumé and job description. External web browsing or external knowledge additions are restricted to eliminate hallucinated qualifications.
- The Mandatory Fact-Check Pass: Prompt 4 forces the model to conduct an audit against the source résumé, flagging any unsupported claims, exaggerated metrics, or invented skills.
- Concise Formatting Rule: Hard constraints limit the draft to under 400 words, ban introductory clichés (e.g., "I am writing to express my interest in..."), and enforce a four-part structure.
Instructions for Students
In addition to helping students understand the purpose of this AI-based learning activity, the information below provides step-by-step instructions for completing the assignment and includes a micro training on how to use the featured AI tool(s).
In this activity, you will use Google Gemini Notebook to build a private, source-grounded career intelligence hub. Unlike generic AI chatbots that guess or make up details, Gemini Notebook works strictly from the documents you provide. You will upload your personal résumé and a target job description to analyze how your background matches the employer's needs, draft a tailored cover letter, conduct a strict fact-checking audit pass, and generate a customized interview preparation guide using the STAR framework (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
Phase 1. Notebook Setup:
- Navigate to Gemini Notebook and log in using your FSU email address.
- Create a new notebook titled Career Launch: [Target Company] - [Target Role].
- Upload your updated résumé as a PDF source.
- Upload or paste the full job description of your target internship or employment position as a second source.
Phase 2. Gap Analysis & Discovery (Prompt 1): In the chat bar, enter the following prompt:
"Based ONLY on my uploaded resume and the target job description, perform a professional alignment analysis. Identify: (1) My top 3 strongest matching qualifications for this role and (2) the 2 most critical skill or experience gaps where my resume does not clearly meet the job description requirements. Provide specific recommendations on how I can frame my existing experiences to bridge these gaps."
Phase 3. Structured Cover Letter Drafting (Prompt 2): Once you review your alignment analysis, enter Prompt 2:"Using ONLY the experiences, skills, and metrics explicitly listed in my uploaded resume, draft a compelling, professional cover letter tailored to the target job description. Adhere strictly to this 4-part structure: (1) Strong hook and immediate value proposition, (2) Body Paragraph 1 highlighting relevant technical/entrepreneurial achievements, (3) Body Paragraph 2 addressing company mission and cultural alignment, and (4) Proactive closing call to action. Keep the tone confident and entrepreneurial. Do NOT use generic opening clichés like 'I am writing to apply for...'. Limit total length to under 400 words."
Phase 4. Fact-Check Audit Pass (Prompt 3 - Refinement & Verification): Before accepting your draft, you must run a dedicated self-audit pass by prompting:
"Review the cover letter draft you just generated against my uploaded resume source. Perform a strict line-by-line fact check. Flag any skills, metrics, job responsibilities, or accomplishments mentioned in the draft that are NOT directly stated in my resume. If any statement exaggerates or hallucinates my background, identify it and rewrite that sentence to reflect only verified facts from my resume."
Phase 5. STAR Interview Prep Guide (Prompt 4): Generate your customized interview guide by prompting:
"Based on the target job description, generate 4 likely behavioral interview questions I will face (including at least one technical competency question and one conflict/failure question). For each question, draft a model response using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result), pulling concrete projects and achievements directly from my resume.”
What to Submit:
Submit a single Word or PDF document in Canvas containing:
- Final Tailored Cover Letter: Polished, fact-audited cover letter (under 400 words).
- Fact-Check Audit Report: Copy of the Prompt 3 audit dialogue showing verified claims and any corrected statements.
- STAR Interview Preparation Kit: The four behavioral questions and structured STAR responses.
- AI Process & Reflection (150-200 words): Brief reflection detailing what the gap analysis revealed about your candidacy, how the audit pass prevented inaccuracies, and the shareable link to your Gemini Notebook workspace.
- What is Gemini Notebook? Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) is an AI study tool from Google that works only from the files you give it. Upload your course materials, then ask questions or generate study aids; every answer is drawn from your sources, with citations. Read more about Gemini Notebook.
- Sign in. Go to notebook.google.com and sign in with your FSU Google account.
- Create a notebook. Click “Create new notebook”, then upload your first source. Click the notebook title at the top to rename it.
- Add sources. In the left Sources panel, click + Add. You can upload PDFs, Google Docs/Slides, paste a website link, or add a YouTube video. Uploaded sources appear in the list with a checkbox – leave them checked so Notebook uses them.
- Know the three panels. Left = Sources (your files). Middle = Chat (ask questions; answers include numbered citations you can click to see the original passage). Right = Studio (one-click study aids).
- Generate a study aid. In Studio, click a tile such as Flashcards, Quiz, Mind Map, Infographic, Report, Slide Deck, or Audio Overview. Generation takes a few seconds to a few minutes; the finished item appears in the Studio list.
- How to play an Audio Overview:
- Locate the Notebook guide: Look at the top-right corner of your screen for the Notebook guide panel. If it isn't visible, click the Notebook guide button in the upper right to open it.
- Find the Audio Overview tile: Inside the Notebook guide panel, locate the section labeled Audio Overview. If one has already been generated, you will see an audio player card displaying a title and playback duration.
- Press Play: Click the circular Play button on the audio card.
- Use playback controls: Once playing, a player bar appears where you can pause, skip backward or forward 15 seconds, adjust volume, or change the playback speed (e.g., 1.25x or 1.5x). You can also click the three-dot menu on the card to download the audio file to your device.
- Customize or revise. Before generating, click the pencil icon on a tile to describe what you want (e.g., "focus on chapters 3-4, harder questions"). To revise something already made, type the change in Chat or regenerate with a new prompt.
- Good to know. Upload only course materials and reliable sources – Notebook is only as accurate as what you give it. Your notebooks save automatically and stay in your account. Take screenshots with Win + Shift + S (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + 4 (Mac).
