Easy Fix is an annual initiative of the Office of Digital Learning (ODL), designed to help instructors and course designers improve course accessibility through a series of small, incremental changes. During the Spring 2026 semester, ODL shared four easy fixes for improving the accessibility scores of Canvas course content. Following these fixes will help you meet the April 24, 2026, federal rule on accessibility* and make learning more accessible for everyone, not just those with disabilities.

  1. Leverage built-in Canvas tools to improve the accessibility of your Canvas course. Ally provides an overview of your Canvas course content from least to most accessible, and TidyUP identifies outdated files that you can remove to improve your Ally score.
  2. Avoid scanned PDFs, which are only pictures of text and cannot be read by a screen reader. FSU Libraries offer a variety of resources to locate online versions of course materials that can be used by all students.
  3. Use Kaltura to create and caption videos in your Canvas course. With this tool, you can easily create transcripts and caption audio and video files, so students with hearing or vision impairments can engage with course content.
  4. Use proper headings when styling text. Headings help students using assistive technologies better navigate content. To help students with color blindness or who are prone to visual strain, ensure the text-to-background color meets the minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1.

*The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) updated its regulations for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in April 2024. The final rule requires public universities to ensure web content and mobile applications (including academic course content) are accessible to people with disabilities. To be compliant, course content must meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Version 2.1 Level AA. The deadline to comply with the DOJ rule is April 24, 2026.
